Listening: Focus Your FOMO Here

You think you’ve heard me, but you’ve heard only your mind,

The words I spoke? Most of them you cannot find.

I ask you to repeat them, and you cannot.

You think that you have heard me, but I was never got.

You're failing at the start before you even try,

Not misreading meaning, just missing words wisping by.

The words are already lost before you can parse their sense,

You've built a hall of mirrors to feel false confidence.

You think you’ve heard me, but you’ve heard only your mind,

The words I spoke? Most of them you cannot find.

I ask you to repeat them, and you cannot.

You think that you have heard me, but I was never got.

Machines that pass a signal echo back to those who send,

Engineers design this check since those signals sometimes bend.

Yet humans, far more error-prone, wave the checking off,

And call it conversation while the real exchange gets lost.

Poor listening is not a simple failure, it's a practiced art.

A skillful piece of armor that’s guarding your defended heart.

To hear precisely means your story has to shift,

So you won't hear precisely, and that’s a hidden gift.

You think you’ve heard me, but you’ve heard only your mind,

The words I spoke? Most of them you cannot find.

I ask you to repeat them, and you cannot.

You think that you have heard me, but I was never got.

Often two monologues in costume as one dialogue,

Each speaker to their inner world a lonely demagogue.

Each mishears the other, creating convenient ghosts.

Both failures serve the egos of the same two righteous hosts.

You think you’ve heard me, but you’ve heard only your mind,

The words I spoke? Most of them you cannot find.

I ask you to repeat them, and you cannot.

You think that you have heard me, but I was never got.

Think of how you’re missing out while you think you're in the know,

A whole person’s sharing and you're letting much of it just go.

The reality behind their words, their want, their wound, their real.

Gone! Because you swapped their truth for something you preferred to feel.

I got it!
