Am I A Home Wrecker?

Oh, you come to me troubled, with troubles in tow,

With a knot you can't loosen, a “yes” or a “no.”

And you sit in my Zoom room with your heart in a squeeze,

And you ask me, "Can you fix this? Oh, fix this, oh please!"

Now I won't say beforehand which way it will end,

For I don't yet know which it is, break it or mend.

I will look, I will listen, we'll sort and we'll sift,

Not for fixing nor nixing, but what’s the best fit.

I can save or destroy, with joy as the aim,

For I'm not here to shore up a person’s “good” name.

I am here to serve lives that are ours to enjoy,

Whether fixing or nixing is the method employed.

​

So with you, oh with you, there's a spark in the ash,

We can blow, and can tend it, and up it could flash!

Then you’ll build, not the old thing, the tired and the worn,

But a marriage that's newer than new, and freshly born.

And they’ll say, "Oh, he saved it!" Well, isn't that grand!?

If you say so, you say so, I’ll shake every hand.
 

So with you, oh with you, there's a truth just as plain,

As a shoe that's too small on a foot full of pain.

And you know it, maybe known it, for quite a few years.

And you're scared of the shame, of the blame, of the tears.

Yet we’ll go, not with hatred, but for what we can bless,

For a great, gracious parting, a clean-hearted new yes.

Be it children or money, the way can be whole,

With no war in the ledger, no scars on our souls.

Others may say, "What a home wrecker! He ripped it in two!"

Yes, together we destroyed it, that little part’s true.

For a marriage is not just a ring or a roof,

Not a shape you must guard as some kind of a proof.

It's alive, or it isn't. It can flow, or it can’t.

And the best way to choose is to see how it slants.

​

Would you stay for the neighbors? Would you stay for the show?

Would you stay for the praise, for the blame you’d dodge so?

But that praise is a blanket too thin for the cold,

And the dodging of blame will just leave you controlled.

Set them down. Set them down. They were never yours to hold.

They mean nothing about you. You always are whole.

​

So we'll sit down together, unhurried, at ease,

While you find what is true underneath all your pleas.

Then you'll choose. Then you'll build. And whichever you build,

Be bold, let it grow, let it leave you fulfilled.
